Ого! I never realized how easy it is for scammers to fake a local Halifax phone number. One minute you think it's the CRA, and the next, your savings are at risk! This is my personal diary of learning how to spot these digital traps.

How I Got Fooled (Almost!)

Last Tuesday, my phone buzzed with a local 902 area code. I thought it was my neighbor! But here is the catch: it was actually a VOIP system from across the ocean. Scammers use software to mask their real identity and mimic trusted organizations like the local police or your bank.

I learned that if a caller asks for immediate action or threatens legal trouble, it’s a massive red flag. Real Canadian banks will NEVER ask for your PIN over the phone. The Infamous CRA Scams

"The Arrest Warrant"

Imagine getting a call saying the RCMP is on their way because you owe taxes! It sounds so scary, right? But the CRA never uses aggressive language or sends the police for a simple inquiry.

Ого! They actually asked me to pay a "fine" using Bitcoin at a local kiosk. Can you believe it? The government only accepts standard payment methods through your bank or My Account portal.

A text saying you have an "unclaimed tax refund" sounds amazing, but it's a trap to get your login info. Always check Digital Account Security before clicking any links.

TRACK SCAMS →

Have you ever received a text from "Canada Post" saying your package is held up due to a wrong address? Wait, don't click that! I almost did yesterday because I actually was expecting a delivery. It turns out, this is one of the most common smishing (SMS phishing) tactics used in Halifax right now.

Utility Bill "NS Power refund waiting for you." MEDIUM

Three Rules I Live By Now:

  • Never Click Links: If a text has a shortened URL (like bit.ly), it is almost 100% a scam. I just delete it immediately!
  • Check the Sender: Real companies use "short codes" (5-6 digits). If it's a full 10-digit mobile number, it's a person, not a bank system.
  • Report to 7726: Did you know you can forward spam texts to 7726 (SPAM) in Canada? It helps carriers block the numbers!
